Getting started

From download to your first answer in a few minutes.

X Alpha AI is a desktop app that runs AI models on your own computer. It needs a free account; your chats and files stay on your computer.

1. Install the app and sign in

Download the installer for Windows or macOS and open it. The Windows build isn't code-signed yet, so Windows may ask you to confirm once. See Troubleshooting.

The app opens on a sign-in screen. Choose Sign in with browser: your browser opens, you sign in (or create a free account) and approve this computer, and the app opens. You stay signed in, and the app keeps working offline after that. Signing out (Settings → Account) or removing the computer from your devices on the website brings the sign-in screen back.

2. Pick a model

The first time the app opens, it checks your memory, graphics card and free disk space. Open Models:

  • Best for this computer suggests a strong model that runs comfortably on your machine.
  • Every model shows whether it fits. Models that won't fit are greyed out with the reason.
  • Press Download. You can pause and resume, even after closing the app.

Not sure what to expect? Open any model in the model catalog on this site: its "Will it run?" section checks it against a computer like yours.

3. Start chatting

Press Start on the model, then type your question in the message box. Answers stream in as they're written, and you can press Stop at any time. Everything stays on your computer and works offline.

The first start of each model takes a little longer: the app downloads its engine (once) and measures how fast the model runs on your computer.
